The Alliance Française de Sydney represented by Dominique Barbeau, was invited to the annual Australian South Sea Islander Reception and
Flag Raising event hosted by the City of Sydney. The event commemorated the forced migration of South Sea Islanders to Australia in the
1800s through blackbirding. Many South Sea Islanders were brought to Australia to work in sugar cane farming, seafaring, and other
industries. The event featured speeches and performances that highlighted the discrimination and disadvantage experienced by South Sea
Islanders throughout Australian history. The City of Sydney Council has formally recognized Australian South Sea Islanders as a unique
minority group and has taken steps to address their historical injustices.
The event was hosted by Councillor Emelda Davis, whose grandfather was abducted from the island of Tanna in Vanuatu when he was 12 years
old. The singer who performed at the event told the audience about her grandfather who was kidnapped from Lifou in the New Caledonian
archipelago. The event was a reminder of the importance of reconciliation and the need to continue working towards a more just and equitable
society.
