A1 Essentials will help you revise the key grammar points of the A1 level course, practice your speaking skills with A1-level material, and refine your accent with focussed attention to the basic sounds and phonemes in French.

Whether you are at the beginning or the end of A1 Beginners level, you can attend this workshop as a means of revision and consolidation or as preparation ahead of your usual class.

This workshop is designed as the perfect revision and consolidation of learning for students at the end of the B1 or start of the B2 levels.

A1

All Sessions

This workshop covers:

Everything you need to know about verb conjugation:
- What it is
- Why it is necessary
- What elements are involved (subject, subject pronouns, regular and irregular verbs)
- How to conjugate in the present tense.

The fundamentals of a conversation:
- How to structure a sentence
- How to ask a question
- Translation traps to avoid

Developing an authentic French accent:
- Get a grip on the sounds in the French alphabet
- Know the impact of accents on letters
- Learn how to pronounce words correctly using the phonetic alphabet
- Understand the nature role of intonation in French

A2

February & August Sessions

This workshop covers:

Getting unstuck on French grammar:
- Correctly use the prepositions à and de
- Include the direct (COD) and indirect (COI) pronouns in your speech
- How to express opposition, refusal or denial with negation structures

Developing an authentic French accent:
- Use rhythm and stress to sound more French, as well as to alter meaning

April & September sessions

This workshop covers:

Getting unstuck on French grammar:
- Go over the construction of the imparfait and passé composé tenses
- Compare the use and structure of the imparfait and passé composé tenses
- Employ adverbs of time in your speech: depuis, pendant, and il y a

Developing an authentic French accent:
- Master the characteristic French nasal sounds

June & November sessions

This workshop covers:

Getting unstuck on French grammar:
- Master the futur simple, giving particular attention to those pesky irregular verbs
- The qui and que relative pronouns
- Overcome uncertainty around whether to use c'est or il est
Developing an authentic French accent:
- Recognise and use the schwa sound in French (e muet )

B1

February & August Sessions

This workshop covers

Getting unstuck on French grammar:
- Know the uses of and differences between personal pronouns (je, tu, il...) and tonic pronouns (moi, toi, lui...)
- Use the conditional tense to speculate about what could/would/should happen
- Go over the construction and uses of the elusive subjunctive mood

Developing an authentic French accent:
- Give your French an authentic flow with linking (enchaînement) and liaisons

April & September sessions

This workshop covers:

Getting unstuck on French grammar:
- Master the major moods and tenses in French
- Use the passive voice
- Know expressions to indicate cause and consequence

Developing an authentic French accent:
- Refine your speech by identifying rhythmic groups and where to place stress in your sentences

June & November sessions

This workshop covers:

Getting unstuck on French grammar:
- Epic revision of the past tenses, including passé composé, imparfait and plus-que-parfait
- When and how to make adjectival agreement with avoir
- Direct and indirect speech in both the present and past tenses

Developing an authentic French accent:
- Use the schwa sound in French (e muet)
