Celebrating 130 years of Alliance Française de Sydney

🎉 We’re thrilled to announce that this year marks 130 years of promoting French language and culture in Sydney!
🙏 Since 1895, Alliance Française of Sydney has been dedicated to promoting the French language and Francophone cultures, strengthening the bond between France and Australia.

💫 We’re ready to celebrate with a series of exceptional events throughout the year.

🗓️ Stay tuned for more updates – we can’t wait to share this special year with you!

This January, we were delighted to welcome Pascaline Meunier from the Agence d’Attractivité de Toulouse, who  brought with her a special pedagogical suitcase filled with Toulouse treasures!

Inside, students discovered violets, an Occitan flag, a Bigflo & Oli CD, and more, offering a unique glimpse into the culture of Toulouse. These gifts have already made their way into our classrooms, where our teachers are sharing their passion for the city with students.

We’re grateful to Pascaline and the Agence d’Attractivité de Toulouse for choosing us as the second recipient of the “Valise de Toulouse” worldwide!

Prix National du Civisme pour la Jeunesse 2024 ceremony

The Alliance Française de Sydney was honoured to participate in the Prix National du Civisme pour la Jeunesse 2024 ceremony, organised by the Association Nationale des Membres de l'Ordre National du Mérite at the Consular Residence, under the distinguished patronage of the Consul General of France. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Consul General and the event organisers for their warm invitation.

We would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to our valued partners—Killarney Heights Public School, the French-speaking Association of the North Shore (FANS), Taren Point Public School, and Lycée Condorcet Sydney - International French School—for their ongoing efforts to empower young people to take action, champion their values, and develop into engaged, responsible members of society.

Australian South Sea Islander Reception

The Alliance Française de Sydney represented by Dominique Barbeau, was invited to the annual Australian South Sea Islander Reception and Flag Raising event hosted by the City of Sydney. The event commemorated the forced migration of South Sea Islanders to Australia in the 1800s through blackbirding. Many South Sea Islanders were brought to Australia to work in sugar cane farming, seafaring, and other industries. The event featured speeches and performances that highlighted the discrimination and disadvantage experienced by South Sea Islanders throughout Australian history. The City of Sydney Council has formally recognized Australian South Sea Islanders as a unique minority group and has taken steps to address their historical injustices.

The event was hosted by Councillor Emelda Davis, whose grandfather was abducted from the island of Tanna in Vanuatu when he was 12 years old. The singer who performed at the event told the audience about her grandfather who was kidnapped from Lifou in the New Caledonian archipelago. The event was a reminder of the importance of reconciliation and the need to continue working towards a more just and equitable society.

140 ans du Mouvement Alliance Francaise - Fun for Kids and Teens

What an incredible day it was to celebrate 140 years of the Alliance Francaise movement with the children and teenagers! Between games, rows, quizzes and cooking, the children and teenagers had a great time. As a bonus, they were able to expand their French vocabulary while having fun. And to top it all off, the super cake competition was a real success, with each of the creations more delicious than the last. A memorable day to celebrate this wonderful occasion together.
